Castro was born August 13, 1926. He started his political activism in the University of Havana. He was very outspoken about anti-imperialism and opposing U.S. intervention in the Caribbean. He formed the 26th of July Movement in 1953 with his brother Raúl Castro and his friend Ernesto “Che” Guevara.
Castro led the Cuban Revolution by leading the Movement in a guerrilla war against President Fulgencio Batista’s forces. The movement defeated Batista’s army in 1959 and Castro became the prime minister of Cuba. He suffered assassination attempt at the Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961, he aligned more with the Soviet Union which led to the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
In 2006, Castro handed over power to his brother and Vice President Raúl Castro.

Fidel Castro’s health deteriorated, it was reported by the international press that he had diverticulitis but the Cuban government did not confirm this. He died on 25 November 2016 and was cremated the next day.
