Wilson was born on December 8, 1933, at the age of seven, he was kept in a foster home. At the age of 16, he joined the United States Air Force. He was known for entertaining the troops.
In 1960, Wilson was booked by Johnny Carson to perform on his show and soon Wilson was a favorite on the show. Also appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show as well. He soon became a toast of television shows. In1970, he won a Grammy Award for his comedy album The Devil Made Me Buy This Dress.
In 1970, he launched his own variety series The Flip Wilson Show. His show featured a lot of black entertainers such as, Harry Belafonte, Diahann Carroll, the Supremes and the Jackson Five.

Flip Wilson died from liver cancer on November 25, 1998 at his Malibu home. He was cremated at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery. He had five children.
