Buzz Aldrin is an American former astronaut and fighter pilot. He and Neil Armstrong were the first men to walk on the moon.

He was born Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. on January 20, 1930. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1947. He was an excellent student and graduated third in the class of 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering.

Buzz joined the astronaut corps in 1963, making him the first astronaut with a doctoral degree. He was part of the Gemini 12 which launched on November 11, 1966, he took photographs and conducted experiments in space.

On July 21, 1969, Buzz set foot on the moon nineteen minutes after his mission commander Neil Armstrong. He was the first person to hold a religious ceremony on the Moon when he privately took communion.

Buzz left NASA in 1971 and became the Commandant of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, a position he held until 1972.
