Neil Alden Armstrong was an American astronaut and the first person to walk on the Moon. He later became a University Professor.

Born on August 5, 1930, Armstrong developed a love for flying from the age of two when his father took him to the Cleveland Air Races. In 1947, he began studying aeronautical engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette. In 1949, Neil became a naval midshipman and served in the Korean war getting two gold stars and the Air Medal.

 

After serving, he graduated with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering in January 1955. In May 1962, Neil applied to become an astronaut, by September he received an offer to join the NASA Astronaut Corps. After years of training, Neil became part of the Apollo 11 crew and was launched into space on July 16, 1969. The crew landed on the moon on July 21, 1969, Neil said, “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” A total of 530 million viewers watched the launch.

Neil Armstrong died on August 25, 2012 after undergoing a bypass surgery. In 2014, his family filed a medical malpractice suit against Mercy Health Fairfield Hospital, where he died. The hospital settled the family $6 million out of court.
