Ethel Kennedy is an American human rights advocate. She is also the widow of U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the sister-in-law of President John F. Kennedy. She was by her husband’s side when he was assassinated in 1968.

Ethel Kennedy (née Skakel) was born on April 11, 1928, to businessman George Skakel. She attended Manhattanville College in 1949, where she met Robert Kennedy through his sister, Jean. Ethel married Robert on June 17, 1950. She was very close to President John and his wife Jackie. They were assigned by the President to visit 24 countries on his behalf.

On November 22, 1963, President J. F Kennedy was killed and Ethel encouraged her husband to be by Jackie’s side and convinced him to run for the 1968 Presidential election. On June 5, 1968, Robert was fatally shot while campaigning. Following Robert’s death, Ethel promised never to remarry and founded the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights in 1968.

Ethel Kennedy is alive and still kicking even at 94. Ethel kept her promise to her husband and did not remarry. She was awarded the Kennedy award by President Reagan in 1981 and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014 by President Obama.
