Bess Houdini was a stage assistant in America. Houdini was the wife of Harry Houdini. Bess Houdini was born on January 23, 1876. Bess Houdini relocated to Hollywood, California, in the 1930s, where she collaborated with Edward Saint, her manager and partner, to promote Houdini’s legacy.

On the roof of the Knickerbocker Hotel in Hollywood, Bess and Saint had a “Final Houdini Seance” on Halloween, 1936. In front of a picture of Houdini, she extinguished the candle that was believed to have burnt for 10 years after the séance ended in failure.

Ten years is a sufficient amount of time to wait for any man, she remarked in 1943.

Following the 1936 seance, Bess urged Walter B. Gibson, author of the mystery novel The Shadow and a close friend, confidant, publicist, and Houdini’s ghostwriter, to continue the annual homage.

For many years, he hosted them at New York’s Magic Towne House with notable figures from the magic world, including Houdini writer Milbourne Christopher. Gibson gave Dorothy Dietrich the custom just before he went away.
