Burt was born on May 12, 1928, to a Jewish family. He graduated from Montreal’s McGill University where he majored in music. After graduating, he joined the army and served for two years. While in the army, he organized the band. In 1957, Burt and lyricist Hal David wrote “The Story of My Life” and it topped the chart and that was the beginning of a partnership.
Burt is a six-time Grammy Award winner and a three-time Academy Award winner. He has worked with artists like Bobbie Gentry, Tom Jones, Herb Alpert, and the Carpenters. He and David are at number 32 on their list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time.
