King was born on February 9, 1942. She started singing at the age of four and formed a band while she was in high school in 1958. King met Gerry Goffin at university, and he became her writing partner. King would compose the music while Goffin writes the lyrics. The duo wrote “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” for Aretha Franklin.
In 1970, King released her first solo album, Writer. Her second album, Tapestry was an instant hit and was in the No. 1 position for 15 weeks. The album sold over 30 million copies and earned her four Grammy awards. King tried her hands at acting, starring in series like Gilmore Girls and Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
