Robert Norman Ross was an American painter and television host. He was the creator and host of The Joy of Painting, an instructional television program that aired from 1983 to 1994 on PBS in the United States.

Young Bob dropped out of high school and enlisted into the Air Force. He served as a medical records technician and was stationed in Alaska where he saw snow for the first time, an image which would appear a lot in his paintings.

Ross developed interest in painting while in the Air Force and took a course at the Anchorage U.S.O. club.

Ross retired from service and started the television show in January, 1983. He would teach viewers how to use the wet-on-wet oil painting technique, Ross grew his television show to become a $15 million business.
