Ronald Wilson Reagan was an American actor who became the 40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989. He was also a Union leader, serving as president of the Screen Actors Guild(SAG) from 1948 to 1959.

Reagan was born on February 6, 1911, in Tampico, Illinois. Even as a young lad, Reagan opposed racial discrimination and he was sociable and great in sports while in high school. Reagan moved on to Eureka College where he majored in Economics and was elected as student president.

Reagan started acting in the 1937 movie Love Is on the Air and went on to star in over 20 films. He was always interested in politics since his days in school. Initially, he was a Democrat but became a Republican in 1962. In 1966, he was elected 33rd Governor of California and served till 1967. In 1967, he campaigned for Presidency but was defeated in the primaries by President Ford.

In 1980, Reagan was back to campaigning and this time he got the Republican party ticket and defeated President Carter in the general elections by receiving 50.7 percent to Carter’s 41.0 percent. Reagan was 70 years old when he was sworn into office for his first term on January 20, 1981, making him the oldest first-term president at the time. As president, he made some significant reforms like the war on drugs and the unification of Germany. The economy flourished while he was president.

In 1994, 83-year-old Ronald Reagan disclosed he was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, but he remained active until 1999. President Reagan died of pneumonia on June 5, 2004, at the age of 93. A state funeral was held, and world leaders gathered to pay respect to this icon.
