He was born Issur Danielovitch on December 9, 1916, in New York. However, he changed his name to Kirk Douglas before joining the United States Navy. He had spoken about his extreme poverty as a child, and he wanted to become an actor from kindergarten.
Kirk screen debut was in the movie The Strange Love of Martha Ivers in 1946. He got his major role in 1949 in the movie, Champion, the role earned him his first Academy Award nomination. By the 1950s, Kirk was a hulking leading man starring alongside the likes of Lauren Bacall, Doris Day and Jean Spangler.
Kirk starred alongside his sons Michael and Joel in the movie, It Runs in the Family in 2003. His final movie was Illusion. Douglas appeared at the 2018 Golden Globes with his daughter-in-law Catherine Zeta-Jones in a rare public appearance.
