Scalfari was also the co-founder of two successful Italian new media, L’Espresso and La Repubblica.
Eugenio was also interested in politics. Before the second world war, he described himself as “Young, happy and fascist” like most Italians then. He however changed his ideology and became a libertarian and pro-choice.
In 1968, Scalfari was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as an independent aligned with the Italian Socialist Party (PSI).
Eugenio was known for investigative journalism. he worked with Lino Jannuzzi to uncover Piano Solo, the attempted 1964 coup d’état by General Giovanni Di Lorenzo in May 1967.
He was an atheist but had several talks with Pope Francis which he published in a series of articles.
