Sandra Day O’Connor is a retired American attorney and politician who served as the first female associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1981 to 2006. She was the first woman nominated and confirmed to the court.

O’Connor was born on March 26, 1930, in El Paso, Texas. She grew up on a ranch without electricity and running water. She learned how to hunt and drive at an early age. O’Connor was a bright student, graduating sixth in her high school and graduating with honors from Stanford University. She also was among the top 10 of her graduating class at Stanford Law School.

O’Connor worked her way up and soon became assistant Attorney General of Arizona from 1965 to 1969. She was the first woman to serve as Arizona’s Majority Leader and soon gained the reputation of a skilled negotiator. President Reagan nominated O’Connor on August 19, 1981, and was confirmed by the Senate 99-0 to become the first female associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

In 2018,Sandra Day O’Connor announced she had been diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s-like dementia and retired from public life. O’Connor is alive and living quietly at Phoenix, Arizona.
