Ray Charles Robinson Sr was an American singer, songwriter and pianist. He was often referred to by contemporaries as “The Genius”. Charles was blinded during childhood, due to glaucoma.
Ray Charles was born on September 23, 1930. His love for music sparked at the age of three. He learnt to play the piano early, sadly Charles began to lose his sight at the age of four.
Charles moved to Jacksonville after his mother died. To earn money, he began to play the piano at the Ritz Theatre.
In 1952, Charles signed with Atlantic Records and “It Should’ve Been Me” and “Don’t You Know” were his first hits. “I’ve Got a Woman” was one of his most notable hits.
In 1960, he released “Georgia on My Mind” which earned him national recognition and four Grammy Awards and another Grammy for “Hit the Road Jack”.
In 1985, he joined other top musicians to record “We Are the World”, Charles worked with some notable singers like Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson and Quincy Jones.

Ray Charles died on June 10, 2004, from complications from liver failure. He was 73 years old. His final album, Genius Loves Company was released two months after his death and it won eight Grammy Awards.
