Johnny Cash was an American country star, singer and songwriter. He was known for his deep, calm and baritone voice. He was fondly called “Man in Black” for his wardrobe choices.

Johnny’s real name is J.R Cash this is because his mother wanted to name him John and his father wanted him to be Ray so he was named J.R. He was born during the Great Depression and his family was greatly affected. This made Cash to be sympathetic to the poor all through his life.

Johnny signed his first record deal in 1955, and released “Hey Porter” and “Cry! Cry! Cry!” which was a quick success. In 1958, Cash released “Don’t Take Your Guns to Town”, which was his biggest hit.

Cash was passionate about prison reforms and the oppression of Native Americans, because of his activism he became friendly with all US presidents from Nixon. He was particularly very close to Jimmy Carter.

Is Johnny Cash Still Alive or Dead?

Johnny Cash had health issues since 1997 when he was diagnosed with Shy–Drager syndrome, a neurodegenerative disease.

He was told he had 18 months to live, however, he was misdiagnosed and it was altered to autonomic neuropathy associated with diabetes.

Johnny’s wife June died in early 2003, this broke his heart. Johnny died May 15, 2003, just four months after his wife died.
