Emily Clyburn, is a librarian, and also a civil rights activist. She is famous for being the wife of James Enos Clyburn. Her husband James Clyburn is the highest-ranking African American member of Congress.
They both met when they were detained for taking part in a civil rights protest while they were still students, at what was then called South Carolina State College in 1960, they both became friends and were close, after they were released, before getting married.
However, after being together for 58 years, the two got married a little more than a year later. Emily Clyburn was well known in South Carolina, and she was also passionate and had a strong connection to her alma mater, which led to her working tirelessly to support them, by assisting in the fundraising of college scholarships.
She also established the library program at W.G. Sanders Middle School and Fairwold Middle School, in Columbia, South Carolina.
