James Enos Clyburn, a politician and retired educator from the United States, was born on July 21, 1940. He represents South Carolina as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Since 2023 and from 2011 to 2019, he has held the position of assistant Democratic leader in the House. He has held the position of majority whip twice, from 2019 to 2023 and from 2007 to 2011.

Clyburn, who is currently serving his 16th term, has represented South Carolina’s 6th congressional district since 1993. His congressional district encompasses nearly the entire portion of South Carolina’s Black Belt, as well as the majority of the precincts with a majority of black residents in and around Columbia, Charleston, and Beaufort.

The leader of South Carolina’s congressional delegation is Clyburn. Apart from Joe Cunningham’s single term, Clyburn has been the only Democrat in South Carolina’s congressional delegation since John Spratt’s resignation in 2011.
