George Denis Patrick Carlin was born in Manhattan, New York City, to Mary (Bearey), a secretary, and Patrick John Carlin, an advertising manager for The Sun; the couple met while working in marketing. His father was Irish-American and his mother was from Donegal, Ireland. When he was two months old, his parents divorced, and he was raised by his mother.
The young George was left alone for long periods of time each day due to the mother’s demanding work schedule, giving him (in his own words) the opportunity to reflect on various topics, listen to the radio, and hone his impersonations, which were praised by his mother and coworkers from an early age. Up until the late 1960s, when he completely changed his persona, Carlin had been a traditional comedian who had enjoyed some success as a raconteur in the vein of Bill Cosby in nightclubs and on television.
