Qatar, officially known as the State of Qatar, is a country in Western Asia. It is situated on the Qatar Peninsula, a piece of northeastern Asia’s Arabian Peninsula.

The single land border is to the south with Saudi Arabia, while the Persian Gulf encircles the rest of its territory. The Gulf of Bahrain, a Persian Gulf inlet, separates Qatar from Bahrain, which is close by.

The majority of the country’s terrain is a low-lying, flat desert, and more than 80% of the population is concentrated in the capital city of Doha. The House of Thani has controlled Qatar as a hereditary monarchy ever since Mohammed bin Thani signed a treaty with the British in 1868 acknowledging Qatar’s exceptional status.

Qatar was ruled by the Ottoman Empire until 1916, when it became a protectorate of the British, before attaining independence in 1971. According to Qatari law, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the current emir, is in charge of practically all executive, legislative, and judicial functions.
