Famechon was born in Paris, the French capital. He and his mother, father, and younger brother moved from Paris to Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia, when he was five years old. After that, the family moved to Middle Park, another Melbourne suburb. A few years later, his mother Antoinette and younger brother Christian moved to Paris, and John and his father Andre followed.

His achievements are still highly regarded, and in 2012, the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame elevated Famechon to Legend status. Famechon, the third Australian boxer to receive such recognition after Les Darcy and Lionel Rose, now has a bronze statue in Frankston, his hometown.

He was named a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours for his outstanding contributions to boxing at the highest level.
