Australian featherweight boxer Johnny Famechon (March 28, 1945 – August 20, 2022) passed away.
Famechon was born in Paris, France. Famechon became a member of the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame’s Moderns category in 2003, and in 2012, he became the third person to receive the Legend designation.

He moved to Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia, a Melbourne suburb, when he was five years old with his mother, father, and younger brother from Paris. After that, the family moved to Middle Park, a Melbourne suburb.

A few years later, his mother Antoinette and younger brother Christian relocated to Paris, and John and his father Andre followed them to Richmond.

 

Famechon graduated from Essendon Technical College. He married Elise (née Alves) at St Brigid’s Church in Mordialloc in 1970. Their first child, Paul, was born in 1972 after they moved to Frankston, and their daughter Danielle was born in 1974.
Throughout his twenty-year career, Famechon established a reputation as a skilled boxer whose defence was his forte.

He had 56 wins (20 by KO), 6 draws, and 5 losses in his professional career. In 1964, he defeated Les Dunn to become Victorian Featherweight champion, and in 1967, he defeated Scot John O’Brien to become Commonwealth Featherweight champion.

At the age of 77, Johnny Famechon, a former world featherweight champion, passed away in Melbourne.
