An ordinary, middle-of-the-road cabaret act scored a big single that rocketed them to international renown during the Glam-Rock era of the early 1970s.

When Peters & Lee achieved their number-one success with ‘Welcome Home’ in July 1973, the charts were still recovering from the assault of Slade’s ‘Cum On Feel The Noize’ and T. Rex’s ’20th Century Boy.’

Lennie Peters and Di Lee reintroduced the straightforward, sing-along pop tune with a lovely melody and unpretentious lyric into this frenetic milieu.

They were unmistakably uncool, yet they struck a chord with the public, who responded to their sentimental appeal.

Leonard Sergeant was born in the north London borough of Islington in 1933.

His father, John, was a local fishmonger and was one of six sons.

At the age of 16, Lennie lost his eyesight, yet he survived tragedy by immersing himself in music.

He had a beautiful voice and taught himself to play the piano on a secondhand upright that his parents had purchased.
