The Tanaru Indian (Portuguese: ndio Tanaru) or the Man of the Hole (Portuguese: ndio do buraco, lit. “Indian of the Hole”) was an indigenous person who lived alone in the Amazon jungle in the Brazilian state of Rondônia. He was the only resident of the Tanaru Indigenous Territory, which the Brazilian government designated as a protected indigenous territory in 2007.
The Man of the Hole’s name, the name of his tribe, and the language they spoke are all unknown. Following the 1970s–1990s genocide of his people by Brazilian immigrants, he was the last person left alive. He lived alone from the mid–1990s until his death in 2022. The Brazilian Fundaço Nacional do Indio (FUNAI) began keeping an eye on the man in 1996; nonetheless, he preferred to live alone and only sometimes engaged in remote communication. The deep hole he left behind in each of his residences, which served no apparent function as he mostly lived by hunting and gathering and moved around a lot, gave him his nickname.
When FUNAI published a video of The Man of the Hole in 2018 to raise awareness about the dangers faced by Brazil’s uncontacted peoples, it garnered attention on a global scale. The Man of the Hole had previously survived an attack by an armed rancher in 2009. In August 2022, his body was discovered in his house.
