The Man of the Hole was a lone native who lived in the Amazon rainforest in the Brazilian state of Rondônia. The Brazilian government classified the Tanaru Indigenous Region as a protected indigenous territory in 2007. He was the only resident.
The name of the tribe that the Man of the Hole belonged to as well as the language they spoke is all unknown. He was the final survivor of his people’s 1970s–1990s genocide by Brazilian immigrants. From the middle of the 1990s until his passing in 2022, he lived alone.
He was being watched since 1996 by the Brazilian Fundaço Nacional do Indio (FUNAI), but he preferred to live alone and only occasionally used remote communication.
He largely lived by hunting and gathering and moved around a lot, thus the deep holes he left behind in each of his homes, which served no apparent purpose, got him his nickname. In order to spread awareness of the risks experienced by Brazil’s uncontacted peoples, FUNAI released a video of The Man of the Hole in 2018. This movie quickly gained international attention. The Man of the Hole had previously escaped a 2009 rancher attack while armed. His body was found in his home in August 2022.

According to Survival International, a non-profit group that works with Indigenous peoples to defend their land rights, the man lived alone in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest for 26 years after his tribe perished in a string of assaults by ranchers and miners that started in the 1970s.
