In 1972, Applewhite became close friends with Bonnie Nettles, a nurse; they had lengthy discussions about mysticism and came to the conclusion that they had been chosen to be divine messengers. They ran a bookstore and educational facility for a brief period of time before starting to tour the country in 1973 to share their ideas.
