Marshall Applewhite established the religious cult known as Heaven’s Gate in Texas. He cited biblical and science fiction texts and claimed to be a prophet. He planned mass suicide by his supporters in 1997 with the hope of being transported on board a spacecraft. His close companion Bonnie Lu Nettles came to the notion that they were “The Two” assigned to carry out a significant job in the Book of Revelation.

On May 17, 1931, Marshall Herff Applewhite was born in Spur, Texas. Applewhite seemed to live a typical life before he learned his strange fate. In 1952, the year he received his degree from Austin College, he was married. He served in the Army’s Signal Corps for two years.

Acting and musical prowess were two of Applewhite’s well-known talents. He sang opera and had a refined public speaking style. His listeners were affected by his commanding baritone voice. He apparently tried unsuccessfully to become an actor multiple times in New York City in the early 1960s.

Applewhite was not the last to die; he committed suicide along with his supporters.
