Ghislaine Maxwell, a jet-setting socialite who once entertained royalty, presidents, and billionaires, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday for assisting wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein in sexually abusing underage girls.

The harsh sentence capped off a trial that delved into the shady rituals of a predator-power couple who courted the rich and famous while luring vulnerable girls as young as 14 and then exploited them.

According to the prosecution, Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime friend, and former girlfriend helped him sexually abuse children hundreds of times over the course of more than a decade before he took his own life in 2019. Epstein committed suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial.

A jury found Maxwell guilty of sex trafficking, transporting a minor to engage in illicit sex acts, and two conspiracy charges in December.

U.S. District Judge Alison J. Nathan, who also imposed a $750,000 fine, stated that “a very significant sentence is required” and that she wished to send an “unmistakable message” that such crimes would be punished.

Prosecutors had asked the judge to sentence Maxwell to 30 to 55 years in prison, while her defence had asked for a five-year sentence.

To comply with coronavirus rules, Maxwell sat quietly before the sentencing, looking ahead as Assistant U.S. Attorney Alison Moe described how Maxwell subjected girls to “horrifying nightmares” by taking them to Epstein.

Is Maxwell still in jail?

Maxwell was arrested at a New Hampshire estate eleven months after his death. He is a US, British, and French citizen who has been held in a federal prison in New York City since then, despite her lawyers’ repeated criticisms of his treatment, including claims that Maxwell was unfairly placed on suicide watch days before sentencing.
