The church community thought Nick and Dawn Hacheney were the perfect couples. Both had been religious since they were children, and while Nick was a pastor, Dawn worked as a loan officer at a credit union. Everything seemed to be fine until a tragic accident changed everything. Nick and his friends went on a hunting trip early on December 26, 1997. Soon after, a neighbor in east Bremerton, Washington, noticed smoke coming from the Hacheney home and called 911. The fire was put out, but the authorities made a grueling discovery inside. Dawn’s charred remains were discovered in the couple’s bed. The officers discovered propane canisters and a space heater in the bedroom. When questioned, Nick stated that the previous night they attended a Christmas party and then opened presents at home. According to him, the wrapping paper was in front of the heater, and the propane cans were a gift.

Dawn hadn’t been feeling well at the time and had taken Benadryl in the middle of the night, which, according to Nick, may have contributed to Dawn’s failure to escape. He also mentioned turning on the heater before leaving for the hunting trip. The authorities initially believed Nick’s story and ruled his death an accident. However, new information prompted them to revisit the case in 2001. Sandra Glass, Nick’s secretary, then came to the police station with new information.
