Her family relocated to Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka when she was six months old, where her brother Sugu was born.
When her father joined the Eelam Revolutionary Organisation of Students (EROS), a Tamil political organization linked to the LTTE, he turned into a political activist. There, he took on the name Arular.
Due to the Sri Lankan Civil War, Arulpragasam’s first eleven years of existence were spent in a shifting scenario. She describes it as “exciting” that troops would fire their weapons at the school while it was still open during the Civil War.
Her students were taught to hide beneath the table or flee to nearby English-language schools where they “wouldn’t get shot,” in her words. Along with a large portion of her extended family, Arulpragasam resided on a road and enjoyed playing within the town’s churches and temples.

Due to her contentious lyrics and her father’s membership in the Eelam Revolutionary Organization of Students (EROS), a group he established and which the US government has designated as a terrorist organization, M.I.A. was denied entry into the country in 2006.
