M.I.A., whose parents are Tamils from Sri Lanka, was born in London and moved to Jaffna, in northern Sri Lanka, with her family when she was six months old.
The Sri Lankan Civil War forced her family to escape their home when she was a little child, and they later arrived in London as refugees. The war significantly influenced M.I.A.’s aesthetic perspective.
She started working as a visual artist, filmmaker, and designer in 2000. She started her musical career in 2002. In the early months of 2004, her songs “Sunshowers” and “Galang” contributed to the development of her career as an underground musician. She was among the first musicians to achieve online fame.
