Mavis Chin, better known as Hammond, was a Jamaican native who moved to the UK in 1959 on a scholarship to work for Norman & Dawbarn Architects. She was born in Jamaica and went by the name Mavis Chin.
She was given a scholarship to Rada, where she spent two years doing evening classes at the City Literary Institute of London.
For her contributions to drama, Hammond was awarded an OBE in the 2005 Queen’s birthday honors list. She was honored with the Women of the World lifetime achievement award in 2018 for her contributions to the theater and advocacy for Black British actors.
The latter award was presented in appreciation of her work at Talawa, one of the most well-known black theater companies in the UK, which she co-founded in response to the lack of diverse acting opportunities for black actors.
The organization has created more than 80 productions, ranging from Oscar Wilde to African classics.
