The Black Liberation Army veteran and American revolutionary Mutulu Shakur, also known as Jeral Wayne Williams, was born on August 8, 1950. The birthplace of Shakur is Baltimore, Maryland. With his mother and younger sister, he relocated to Jamaica, Queens, New York City, when he was seven years old.

With the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), Shakur initially became politically active in his late teens. Later, he joined the Republic of New Africa.

Shakur contributed to the 1981 theft of an armoured car together with other Black Liberation Army soldiers. Both the May 19 Communist Organization and Weather Underground members supported it.

The BLA team grabbed $1.6 million in cash from a Brink’s armoured car at the Nanuet Mall in Nanuet, New York. They also murdered Peter Paige, a Brink’s guard, as well as Edward O’Grady and Waverly Brown, two more Nyack police officers. Another Brink’s guard, Joseph Trombino, also perished.

For his part in the 1981 theft of a Brinks armoured truck, which led to the deaths of a guard and two police officers, Mutulu Shakur was given a sixty-year prison sentence.
