The Purple Heart (PH) is a military decoration given by the United States to soldiers who were hurt or died while serving in the military on or after 5 April 1917. The Purple Heart is the oldest military award still presented to members of the United States Military, along with its predecessor, the Badge of Military Merit, which had the appearance of a heart made of purple cloth. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is situated in New Windsor, New York.

George Washington, who was the Continental Army’s commander-in-chief at the time, issued an order from his headquarters in Newburgh, New York, on August 7, 1782, creating the first Purple Heart, also known as the Badge of Military Merit. Only three Revolutionary War soldiers received the Badge of Military Merit from George Washington. Washington gave his subordinate officers permission to award Badges of Merit as necessary. Although it was never discontinued, the badge was not formally suggested again until after World War I.
