Born Colin Lionel Emm on 20 November 1932 to a van driver and factory worker. 14-year-old Dawson joined the British Merchant Navy where he pursued a career in boxing. However, after his service, he decided to pursue comedy where he made his debut on the Benny Hill Showcase in 1954.
He made his film debut as a minor role in the film King Rat in 1965. He soon joined the cast of Hogan’s Heroes as Cpl. Peter Newkirk, this role earned him fame. In 1976, Dawson became the host of Family Feud, which earned him an Emmy award. He was also a frequent guest host for the Tonight Show from 1979 and 1980.
In 1994, Dawson went back to host Family Feud after the host was fired, he was on the show for a year. He officially retired in 1995.
