William “Smokey” Robinson Jr. is an American singer, songwriter, record producer and former record executive director. He was the founder and frontman of the Motown vocal group the Miracles.

Robinson was born February 19, 1940. While in high school, he formed a music group named the Five Chimes. The name was changed in 1957 to The Matadors and eventually the Miracles. The group became the first artist signed to Motown Records.

In 1960, the group released their first single, “Shop Around” which was a huge success. They went on to release other songs like “The Tears of a Clown” which became No.1 on the charts. In 1965, the group changed their name again to Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. Smokey was the major songwriter for Motown Records writing for Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.

Smokey announced his retirement from the group in 1972 and a year later he launched his solo career with album, Smokey. He finally became a successful solo artist with his hit, “Being with You”. He has a list of hits between 1981 and 2014.

Smokey Robinson is alive although he was hospitalized and treated for Covid in 2021 but he made a full recovery. He has stepped up his physical workout regime to stay fit to ward off reinfection.
