Dame Deborah James, 40, passed away after a five-year fight with stage 4 intestinal cancer, according to her family.

She raised millions of pounds for research in her final weeks and was named a dame for her “tireless” efforts to raise public awareness of the disease.

Early in May, the host of the BBC podcast You, Me, and the Big C reported that she had ceased getting active treatment and was instead receiving end-of-life care at her parents’ house in Woking, with her husband Sebastien and their two kids present.

The family of Dame Deborah James shared a message on Instagram announcing her passing. She was remembered as “the most amazing wife, daughter, sister, and mother.” Deborah died softly today in the presence of her family.

We are really proud of Deborah’s work and dedication to philanthropic campaigning, fundraising, and her never-ending attempts to raise awareness of the cancer that afflicted so many people.

Many of you may know Deborah as Bowelbabe. Deborah shared her story with the world in an effort to challenge taboos, bust prejudices, and change how people communicate about cancer. Even under the most challenging conditions, she persevered in raising money and awareness.
