He was born on January 14, 1964, in Holly Springs, Mississippi, he was the son of a school teacher and a cotton merchant. Sam spent most of his childhood in small towns in Mississippi, including Holly Springs, where he grew up.

After graduating from high school, Sam attended the University of Mississippi, where he studied journalism.

He later went on to work at various local television stations across the United States, including in Florida, Texas, and Tennessee, before getting a job at Fox News Channel in 1996. At Fox News, Sam became known, and was one of the most recognizable faces on the network.
