American cleric Warren Jeffs was found guilty of raping children. The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS Church), a polygamous branch of the Latter-Day Saint movement, is led by Jeffs as its president. On December 3, 1955, Warren Steed Jeffs was born in Sacramento, California.

Jeffs was born and raised outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, and for more than 20 years he oversaw the FLDS private school Alta Academy near the head of Little Cottonwood Canyon. He became the principal in 1976, the year he turned 21. Due to his escape from the accusations that he had set up illegitimate marriages between his adult male followers and minor females in Utah, Jeffs was added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List in 2006.

Arizona filed eight additional allegations against Jeffs in two separate cases in 2007, including incest and engaging in sexual activity with children. Jeffs was found guilty on two counts of rape as an accessory in September 2007 and given a sentence of ten years to life in prison in the Utah State Prison. However, the conviction was reversed by the Utah Supreme Court in 2010 due to deficient jury instructions.

Jeffs was then deported to Texas, where he was found guilty of aggravated sexual assault against a child, a 12-year-old he had married, and sexual assault of a juvenile, a 15-year-old. He was given a life sentence plus 20 years in jail and a $10,000 fine in 2011 for these crimes.
