She served in various capacities working against apartheid including serving as a special assistant to Nelson Mandela, a member of the provincial cabinet (MEC) and ambassador to Mozambique.
Jessie Duarte was born “Yasmeen Dangor” on September 19, 1953, at Johannesburg. Jessie was recruited into the ANC in 1979 to set the women’s structure across South Africa.
She grew in ranks in the party due to her activism against apartheid. In 1988, Jessie was detained without trial and was placed under restriction.

In 2012, Duarte was Deputy Secretary-General of the African National Congress, she was re-elected in 2017 for another 5 years term.
Early this year, she was given medical leave. There were speculations she had died due to her absence.
Jessie revealed in April 2022, that she was battling cancer. Sadly she lost the battle and died early hours of Sunday, 17 July 2022 at the age of 68.
