James Enos Clyburn is an American Politician, who has represented South Carolina as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He represented South Carolina as a Democrat from 2011 to 2019, and till date, and also serves as the House assistant Democratic leader.

Clyburn relocated to Columbia to work on Governor John C. West’s administration after making an unsuccessful bid for the South Carolina General Assembly, in 1971.

After reading Clyburn’s reaction to his loss in the papers, West called Clyburn and offered him a position as his advisor. Clyburn became South Carolina’s first non-white governor’s advisor after West named him as his advisor.

Following the 1968 Orangeburg Massacre, in which South Carolina State police killed three protesting students, West appointed Clyburn as the state’s commissioner of human affairs. Which he held this position until his resignation to run for Congress in 1992.
