The Gambino family, one of the most powerful American mafia groups, was led by John Joseph Gotti Jr.

He was routinely involved in murders, murder conspiracies, loan sharking, heroin selling, racketeering, obstructing the court system, illicit gambling, undercover activity, submitting fraudulent tax returns, and other criminal activities.

Gotti, who grew up in a big, impoverished family in New York, began stealing at an early age. As he got older and gained more ties in the criminal underground, he joined the Gambino family as one of their proteges, and after assuming leadership of various organized crimes, he was raised to the post of family boss.

He rapidly became known across America for being lavish and noisy.

John Gotti was born in the South Bronx of New York to Fannie and J. Joseph Gotti. He was the fifth child in a family of thirteen, and his father used to support such a big family on a meager salary from a day labor job.

Gotti began working as a janitor in a covert club run by Carmine Fatico, the chief of the Gambino criminal family, when he was 12 years old. There, he met Aniello Dellacroce, who would eventually become his instructor.
