South African politician and activist Julius Sello Malema was born in 1976. In July 2013, he founded the Economic Freedom Fighters political party, which he currently leads as president.

In 1995, Malema was chosen as the regional chairperson and chairman of the Seshego Youth League branch. He was chosen as the national president of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) in 2001 after serving as the Limpopo province’s COSAS chairman since 1997. Malema escorted schoolchildren on a COSAS march through Johannesburg in 2002; the march was marred by instances of violence and looting.

Malema completed his education at Seshego, Limpopo’s Mohlakaneng High School. His two-year diploma in youth development from the University of South Africa was earned in 2010. (UNISA). He started at UNISA in 2011 and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications and African Languages in March 2016. He graduated with a BA (Honors) in Philosophy from UNISA in 2017.

Both Zuma and Cassel Mathale, the Premier of the Limpopo Province, referred to him as the “future leader” of South Africa. He has received negative press for being a “reckless populist” who would incite racial strife and destabilize South Africa.

In both March 2010 and September 2011, Malema was adjudicated guilty of using derogatory language. In November 2011, he was kicked out of the ANC for five years for sowing division within the group. He was once more found guilty of hate speech in 2011 after singing “Dubul’ ibhunu” (“Shoot the Boer”), and his expulsion from the ANC came when the conviction was upheld on appeal.

In 2012, Malema was charged with racketeering, fraud, and money laundering. After multiple delays brought on by the National Prosecuting Authority, the case was rejected by the courts in 2015, raising questions about the charges’ political motivation.
However, Malema will face a private lawsuit for suspected corruption, according to a 2018 statement from the Afrikaner civil rights group AfriForum.
