Julius Malema, a Mopedi, was born and raised in Seshego, near Polokwane, in Transvaal Province, now known as Limpopo. His mother was a domestic worker and a single parent. He joined the African National Congress’ Masupatsela at the age of nine or ten. Malema attended Mohlakaneng High School in Seshego, Limpopo. He earned a two-year diploma in youth development from the University of South Africa in 2010. (UNISA). He enrolled in UNISA in 2011 to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and African Languages, and he graduated in March 2016. He graduated from UNISA with a BA (Honours) in Philosophy in 2017. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at the University of the Witwatersrand. Malema was charged with fraud, money laundering, and racketeering in 2012. Following several postponements, the case was dismissed by the courts in 2015 due to excessive delays by the National Prosecuting Authority, giving rise to suspicions that the charges were politically motivated. However, Afrikaner rights group AfriForum announced in 2018 that it would prosecute Malema on the corruption charges on its own.
