Kanye West was born Kanye Omari West on June 8, 1977. He is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, and fashion designer. He is widely considered one of the most influential hip-hop performers of all time, as well as one of the best musicians of the twenty-first century.
Born in Atlanta and reared in the mostly white, middle-class suburb of Oak Lawn, Illinois, West rose to prominence in the early 2000s as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records, releasing songs for various artists and pioneering the “chipmunk soul” sampling technique. He released his debut studio album, The College Dropout (2004), to critical and financial acclaim, with the intention of launching a solo career as a rapper. Later that year, he established the record label GOOD Music.
Kanye relocated to Chicago, Illinois, with his mother after his parents split when he was three years old. His father, Ray West, is a former Black Panther and one of The Atlanta Journal-first Constitution’s black photojournalists. Ray then became a Christian counselor and, with starting funding from his son, launched the Good Water Store and Café in Lexington Park, Maryland, in 2006. Dr. Donda C. West (née Williams) was an English professor at Clark Atlanta University and the Chair of the English Department at Chicago State University before resigning to work as West’s manager.
