Kanwasi Addo Since 2010, Alfred Kwarteng has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Spelthorne in northern Surrey. Kwarteng was born on May 26, 1975.

Kwarteng served under Liz Truss as Chancellor of the Exchequer from September to October of 2022 after serving as Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy from 2021 to 2022.

Kwarteng was an outspoken supporter of Owen Paterson, who had been found guilty of “an egregious case of paid advocacy” by the Commons Select Committee on Standards.

In response to this ruling, Kwarteng called on Kathryn Stone, the independent Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, to “decide her position.” Later, the government reversed its support for Paterson, who resigned as an MP. The opposition demanded an investigation into Kwarteng, claiming Kwarteng may have violated the ministerial code.

Kwarteng issued an apology letter to Stone on November 15, 2021, saying Kwarteng “did not mean to express doubt about your ability to discharge your role” and apologizing for “any upset or distress my choice of words may have caused.”
