Akwasi Addo served Spelthorne’s (in northern Surrey) as a Member of Parliament (MP) since 2010. He made history as the first black Secretary of State, when he was promoted to Business Secretary in January 2021, Kwarteng endorsed Liz Truss’ campaign for Conservative leader, which was after Johnson resigned in 2022.
He was chosen by Truss to become Chancellor of the Exchequer when she was chosen as Prime Minister. Kwarteng released a “mini-budget” on September 23 that was heavily criticized and momentarily caused sterling to drop to all-time low and also the US currency.
