LGBT rights activist Laverne Cox is an American actor. She rose to fame for her role as Sophia Burset in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, where she was nominated for an Emmy in the acting category, becoming the first transgender candidate since composer Angela Morley in 1990.

She made history in 2015 by being the first transgender woman to win a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Special while serving as executive producer of Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word. As Cameron Wirth on CBS’s Doubt, she made history as the first transgender actor to play a transgender series regular on American broadcast television.

Cox co-produced and co-hosted the makeover competition television series TRANSform Me in addition to being a contestant on the first season of VH1’s reality series I Want to Work for Diddy.
