Lisa Carlson, a mother of two, was assassinated in Washington, D.C., in July 1998, marking the end of a family’s simmering conflict. Soon after, the police began looking into Carol’s mother and Daniel, Carol’s ex-husband. The focus of Investigation Discovery’s “The 1990s: The Deadliest Decade: A House in the Woods” is the investigation into Lisa’s murder and the evidence used to catch the killers.
According to the police, who initially believed the crime scene had been staged to look like a robbery, the killer pretended to be Lisa Carlson in order to humiliate her.

Nothing of value was taken, even though the drawers were opened, and their contents were discarded, and there were no traces of a forced entrance.

The police found spent shells at the scene, and blood traces on the back of the couch indicated that Lisa’s body had been moved after being shot.
The detectives found that despite being divorced, Daniel and Lisa were still living together at the time of the occurrence. Before Lisa quit her job to become a stay-at-home mother, the two struggled greatly, and their financial situation deteriorated.

After a while, the couple made the decision to file for bankruptcy and moved into a trailer owned by Daniel’s parents, Carol and Daryl, in Kapowsin, Washington. Another point of contention was how they felt about Carol.

According to the witnesses, she was close to Daniel, and he obeyed her commands. Daniel and Lisa decided to live together until their bankruptcy case was finished.

However, Lisa carried on with her life and began dating Shawn McKillop.

The two were reportedly challenged by Carol and Daryl, with Carol criticizing Lisa verbally and Daryl punching both of them. When the police questioned Daniel, he acknowledged that he spoke to Carol at around 8 o’clock. Around 5:45 p.m., the twins unannounced knocked on her door, she informed her son. When Daniel got home about nine o’clock, he found Lisa and called the police.

According to the authorities, Daniel was accused of committing the murder with Carol’s assistance. Carol had postponed her plans for that day’s afternoon.

The authorities eventually came to the conclusion that Lisa’s mother and son, Carol and Daniel Carlson, were responsible for her death because they didn’t want Lisa to take the kids away. The spouse of Daniel’s closest buddy testified that her husband had admitted relocating Lisa’s body. In April 2003, Carol, 51, and Daniel, 31, were determined to have killed Lisa. They were sentenced to 37 years in prison for their crime. But afterwards, the convictions were overturned, leading to new plea bargains for both.

Carol admitted guilt on three counts of second-degree assault and one count of sexually abusing human remains. She received a 9-year sentence, and in 2008, after completing it, was released. In January 2008, Daniel pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was given a 23-year sentence. It appears that he was released in 2022 when he was granted parole. However, the mother and boy have maintained a low profile ever since, and little is known about their current whereabouts. Daniel seems to live in Puyallup, Washington, whereas Carol appears to live in Spanaway, Washington.
