He performed professionally all around the world for more than 60 years and referred to mime as the “art of silence.” Marceau joined Jean-Louis Barrault’s troupe right once and was offered the role of Arlequin in the pantomime Baptiste, a role that Barrault had previously played in the motion picture Les Enfants du Paradis.

To promote the “art of silence,” Marceau gave performances all throughout the world. Only the intellectual minority was aware of him before his first U.S. tour in 1955 and 1956, which came after his North American debut at the Stratford Festival in Canada.
