She developed a method for storing solar energy while she was a student at MIT, using sodium sulfate, and immigrated to the United States, so she could pursue a career in biophysics in 1925.
Mária Telkes traveled to Cleveland, Ohio to see a relative who served as the Hungarian consul when she immigrated to the United States in 1924. She was then given a job at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation to look into how much energy is produced by living things. While she was employed by the foundation, Telkes conducted research, and with the help of George Washington Crile, they created a photoelectric device that could capture brain waves.
