Mária Telkes was born on December 12, 1900, she is a Hungarian-American inventor and biophysicist. She worked on solar energy technologies and obtained citizenship in the United States in 1937, when she started working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1939, so as to develop useful applications for solar energy. She developed a method for storing solar energy while she was a student at MIT, using sodium sulfate, and immigrated to the United States, so she could pursue a career in biophysics in 1925.

Mária Telkes traveled to Cleveland, Ohio to see a relative who served as the Hungarian consul when she immigrated to the United States in 1924. She was then given a job at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation to look into how much energy is produced by living things. While she was employed by the foundation, Telkes conducted research, and with the help of George Washington Crile, they created a photoelectric device that could capture brain waves.
